Red Weather Warning: Useful information

Wednesday, 24 June 2026

Cardiff is experiencing exceptionally hot weather this week, with the Met Office issuing a rare Red Warning for today and Thursday.

Cardiff Council has activated its Strategic (Gold) response. Here's some useful info:
Cardiff Council is working with emergency services and partner organisations to respond to the extreme heat.

Their priority is keeping residents, visitors and staff safe while maintaining essential services across the city.

Schools are expected to remain open where it's safe to do so.

Measures include:
  • Drinking water
  • Better ventilation
  • Flexible uniform policies
  • Adjusting outdoor activities

Parents should send children with a refillable bottle, hat and sunscreen.

Extra support is in place for vulnerable residents.

SWEP has been activated to support people experiencing homelessness, while care providers are carrying out enhanced welfare checks and adapting services during the hot weather.

Some Council services are changing this week.
  • Waste and recycling collections are starting earlier (from around 5am).
  • Garden waste collections have been paused to prioritise essential collections while protecting crews.
  • Event organisers are working with the Council to keep visitors safe during the heat.
Roads and transport infrastructure are also being monitored as temperatures remain exceptionally high.

HEALTH ADVICE

Stay hydrated.

Drink more water than usual, even if you don't feel thirsty. Small, regular sips are best. Limit alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks, which can make dehydration worse.

Stay cool by:
  • Avoiding the sun between 11am–3pm
  • Wearing light clothing and a hat
  • Using high SPF sunscreen
  • Keeping curtains closed
  • Exercising early or later in the evening

Check in on family, friends and neighbours, especially older people, young children and anyone with underlying health conditions.

A quick call or visit could make a real difference.

Know the signs of heat exhaustion:
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling sick
  • Heavy sweating
  • Muscle cramps
  • Fast breathing
  • High temperature

Move to a cool place, drink water and cool the skin.

If someone becomes confused, loses consciousness, has a seizure, or doesn't improve after cooling down, seek urgent medical help.

Your local pharmacy can also help with many heat-related conditions, and NHS 111 Wales is available for advice.
