Following the public meeting in Radyr, organised by Cllr Helen Lloyd Jones, I met with the Post Office Minister, Blair McDougall MP, to raise concerns about the potential closure of Radyr's Station Road branch and the impact this could have on our community.
At that meeting, I took directly to the Minister, the views expressed by residents at the public meeting. The strength of feeling was clear: local people see the Post Office as an essential service and are deeply concerned about the prospect of losing it.
I stressed that this is not simply a matter of convenience. For many residents, particularly older people and those who rely on local services, the Post Office plays a vital role in everyday life.
The Minister assured me that he would raise Radyr directly with Post Office leadership during his subsequent meeting with them. I made clear that our community's concerns must be properly considered.
I also challenged the limitations of the current national framework. While Radyr technically meets the requirement of being within three miles of another branch, accessibility is about far more than distance alone.
For older residents, those with mobility challenges, and people without access to a car, travelling to another branch is not always straightforward. Public transport links and practical accessibility must be taken into account.
I have since written to the Post Office seeking clarity on how these local factors are being considered, what replacement options may be available, and to ensure residents are given a proper opportunity to have their say through any consultation process.
